Not unlike restoring furniture, the restoration of hardware is not difficult, but it can be somewhat time-consuming.

The decision to restore will depend largely on the desired result. Doors with mortise locksets generally require a restoration and tie-in with the vernacular of your older home.

The examples shown here had all been painted. The old paint has to be taken off by boiling the hardware in a pot and then scrubbing with a toothbrush, believe it or not. Chemicals will destroy the plated finish underneath.
